The Wake of Generations
Artist : AYLO and SECA
We’ve chosen to name the mural “The Wake of Generations” to emphasise the lasting impact of Fleetwood’s maritime history on the community, passed down through the generations. The term “wake” symbolises both the physical trail left behind by boats and the figurative mark left by each generation of fishermen. It reflects the way the town’s traditions and heritage continue to ripple through time, influencing the present and future. This name encapsulates the connection between the past and the ongoing story of Fleetwood’s identity. AYLO AKA Hayley Garner Artist
This mural is a reflection of Fleetwood’s connection to the sea, its maritime history, and the traditions that bind the community together. Created with the input and ideas of local residents through workshops and community engagement meetings, this piece is a visual representation of the collective spirit and shared heritage of Fleetwood.
A pair of hands cradle a model boat, the Harriet FD111, which has a deep historical significance to Fleetwood. Built in 1893 by Singleton Brothers at Wyre Dock, the Harriet was a traditional fishing smack rigged as a ketch, representing the town's strong maritime roots. Originally sail-driven and later fitted with a semi-diesel engine, the Harriet represents Fleetwood's transition from sail-powered fishing to motorised vessels. This evolution in the fishing industry helped shape the community’s identity, as Fleetwood became one of the most significant fishing ports in the UK.
The stormy sea surrounding the hands symbolises the challenges and uncertainties that have always been a part of life both on land and at sea. The hands hold the boat securely, representing the community’s resilience and the way it has always protected its traditions and looked after one another, especially in turbulent times.
The Impact of the Fishing Industry’s Decline:
Fleetwood's prosperity was built on its fishing industry, but the decline of this industry in the late 20th century left a lasting impact on the town. With the closure of the fishing docks in 1982, many families who had relied on the sea for generations faced economic hardship, and the town saw changes that affected both its economy and social fabric. Yet, despite these challenges, the community’s strength and connection to its maritime heritage have endured. This mural, reflects Fleetwood's determination to preserve its history while continuing to adapt and move forward.
On one of the fingers of the hands is a small crab, a nod to a local tradition—crabbing. For many Fleetwood families, crabbing is more than just a pastime; it’s a rite of passage, a simple joy passed down through generations. It’s these small, shared experiences that show the power of community life, connecting young and old, past and present.
The seagull flying by is a familiar sight to anyone in Fleetwood, serving as a reminder of the town’s ever-present connection to the sea and sky. The seagull represents freedom, movement, and the ongoing story of Fleetwood as it continues to evolve while staying rooted in its history.
